Physicality

somewhere between 14 and 16 years old, with one of those appearances where it's easy to second-guess about it; she's got a baby face, but she's just hit her growth spurt without having grown into it so she's all graceless and gangly
wears lots of lovely elegant dresses in neutral colors, but prefers practical walking boots. her clothes are form-hiding but she's sort of sickly-skinny underneath
long, wiry brown hair that always tangles itself and ends up scruffy and out of control no matter what she does. granted, this is partially because she has a habit of playing with it; she likes to braid things, ribbons or flowers or even grass or beads, into it as she finds them, and will pin and unpin her hair to accommodate
missing a front tooth; has no shame about it and all her smiles are wide
fidgety but well-mannered; will politely stand in place instead of running around, but inevitably will start playing with the lace on her dress or her hair before too long. incessantly bounces her leg if made to sit. her gestures become increasingly grand and sweeping as she gets excited when she's speaking in sign language
in general she's mostly very clean and put together but always appears as though she's never worn a nice dress before in her life and while she doesn't dislike it, she doesn't know what to do about it, either

cadence is mute, but not deaf; she can understand anything spoken to her but cannot reply in turn. she does know a form of sign language invented in and native to her home world; solarium's universal translator will allow anyone who knows some form of sign language to communicate in it with the same level of fluency they can with their own native sign language
literacy is not standard where she comes from and so she's mostly illiterate and, as such, cannot communicate through writing
almost always carrying her violin case around, ideally strapped to her back; it's very well taken care of
cadence is a witch in training herself who can communicate with natural and otherworldly forces; she can communicate with some animals and has some amount of manipulative powers over nature that mostly work out by her asking nicely and the plants deciding if they want to work with her or not. she uses this magic through playing music or through sign language
she's a skilled violinist; she can play a few classic, elegant pieces very well and play from sheet music, and she's especially good at improvisational folk fiddling

cadence was a scruffy street urchin who, tiny and hungry and ignorant, started stealing food from the witch viola who just sort of went "well this one is mine now" and cadence absolutely wasn't going to complain about free meals and a warm bed
magic is primarily a form of communication, especially with forces outside of human understanding; nature, but also the supernatural. music is an especially effective means of magic because you can get across feeling and intent without specific words
so cadence's first foray into the world of magic is learning the violin, because cadence is so disappointed she doesn't have a means of helping her new mom with magic
as viola learns and teaches her newfound daughter sign language, she decides to bust her ass inventing a whole new school and method of magic so cadence can use magic with her, since sign language is just as much a form of communication as anything
